Backyard Jammer – Lanza van der Mescht

Meet up and coming female MotoX Enduro rider Lanza van der Mescht a.k.a ‘The Flying Dutchman’. She’s part of the ShredBettys team – the organization that was founded by female riders for female riders and she’s scrambling up some dirt on the local Enduro circuit. We chatted to Lanza about all things with two wheels and we hope to chat to more ladies like her in the future! Here’s to some of our local bettys kicking ass and taking names on the alternative sports scene.

Years racing Enduro: Just over a year

Hometown: Durban

Injuries: Numerous scratches, roasties, bruises, sprains, scars and I popped my shoulder out once

How did you get into Enduro?

My partner introduced me to the most amazing sport ever!

Where are your favourite places to ride?

Anywhere that comprises of vertical hills and 90 degree drop-offs, along with rocks, rocks and more rocks and don’t forget the sandy bits…too much fun!

What’s the advantage to being a woman in the sport and some of the disadvantages?

The advantage is that guys generally are a lot more accommodating towards women; most of them are willing to help you and give you a tip or two. The disadvantage is that guys do not always take the female riders seriously.

What has been your best ranking to date?

Top 3 in Ladies Division for SCMSC Harescramble.

Whose one of your Enduro heroes and why?

Taddy Blazusiak from Poland. He is so talented, focused and humble.

How has ShredBettys helped with your Enduro career and your involvement in the sport?

It’s a great support network and platform because they always have events and girls that wanna ride.

When can we catch you at the next Shred Betty events?

On the 18th of February 2012 at the Backyard Bang at Westmead or April 12th at the Backyard Bang in Lesotho.

Who is your biggest competition locally?

Anja Conci – just moved up from juniors.

What are some of your dreams and goals for Enduro?

To ride as often as I can and to compete on a regular basis and maybe be the first lady to finish Gold in The Roof Of Africa.

What’s been your hardest race – the one you didn’t think you’d finish?

In The Sierra Ranch Harescramble, my bike broke three times but I managed to finish.

Where would you love to race Enduro in the world?

I would love to do the Romaniacs.
