Young Salt Rock Surfer Making Waves. During the recent swell that hit Supertubes, JBay, a young surfer from salt Rock in Durban was one of the stand-outs. Taking off on set waves without fear, holding his own amongst the crowds, and pulling into big barrels whenever the opportunity showed itself. Calvin Goor is that young surfer, building a name for himself amongst the highly competitive junior surfing circuit in South Africa.
Last year Calvin trained under the High Performance Surfing Academy in Durban, and came out on top in their Future Legends Coaching Series, and as a result he won a slot in the JBU Supertrials presented by RVCA, the trials event for the JBay Open Championship Tour event at Supertubes. He was the youngest competitor at the event and although he didn’t win, he took the experience to further his surfing career. He has been fast – improving since he has been utilising the coaching offered by the High Performance Surfing Academy.
Here at the Billabong Junior Series Final Calvin has been killing it, through to the semi finals of the WSL Junior Series division, after blazing through in the excellent conditions that have been pouring through for two days in a row. The powerful natural-footer is at home at the point-break waves, and his powerful approach to the walls of Seal Point has seen him rack up the big scores throughout.
On top of that he has also been performing in the U16 division, and is through to the semi-finals of this division as well. Calvin has been competing for a number of years with a wealth of good results behind him, and he will most definitely have a long and illustrious career ahead of him.
Calvin comes from a long line of successful surfers that have grown up north of Durban. Ballito, Umhlanga and Salt Rock have all been home to surfers who have killed it on the local scene, as well as many of them who have traveled and competed internationally on the World Surf League Qualifying Series.
Calvin has his heart set on a professional career and will be furthering this career after his junior surfing days are over. Calvin will go on to compete in the Billabong SA Junior Champs that are set to begin next week at the Lower Point in JBay, another premier right-hand point-break in the Eastern Cape.
