The 2018 drifting season has official kicked off with Round 1 of the SupaDrift Series in the bag. Drivers from around the country gathered at Carnival City to battle it out on the tarmac, sideways-style.
Competitors were separated into the Pro1 and Pro divisions with four drivers competing in Pro1. Jonothan van Essyen took top honours with, new comer Sebastian Rich finishing in 2nd. Trevor Puren rounded off the podium in 3rd.
The Top 16 was hotly contesting in the Pro division. Although having some mechanical issues in practice, Jason Webb went on to take the top qualification position. Shane Gutzeit had been on form all weekend long but had to retire with a broken gearbox, while Zein Hussein ceased his motor mid-run handing the win to Adam Shefer.
Gavin Puren and Mathys Naude put on a show the minute they left the starting blocks – in both runs they stayed at each other’s doors. Puren advanced to face Jason Webb but would fall to Webb’s Monstang.
Cape Town’s Chris Long put on an excellent display of driving, relegating his opponents and eventually ending up on the 3rd step of the podium. Jim Mc Farlane made a brilliant come-back after having to replace his engine and advanced through to the final agains Jason Webb. Webb was dominant and took the win, his first of the season staking his claim for the 2018 SupaDrift Championship.
