2017 SA Motocross Nationals Dirt Bronco Race Report

The fourth round of the 2017 Monster Energy TRP Distributors SA National Motocross Championship took place at Dirt Bronco over the weekend. The event saw a record number of entries and spectators make their way to the circuit for what was a perfect day for racing.

In the MX1 class it was the former multiple SA Champion, Richard van der Westhuizen who claimed the overall. Although finishing 4th in the first heat, Van der Westhuizen took an early lead in heat 2 and ran away from the field for the win. Damon Strydom put in an excellent performance by winning the first heat and finishing 5th in the second heat to take 2nd place for the day. Tristan Purdon put in a great effort going 3-2 for 3rd overall and retained his points lead. David Goosen was also in the mix and gained valuable season points by going 2-3 for 4th place, while Kerim Fitz-Gerald went 5-4 for 5th place.

The biggest upset came in the MX2 class. After 6 consecutive wins, Maddy Malan had a bad day in the office going down in heat 1 and crashing out of heat 2. A hard charging Anthony Raynard won the 1st heat and and was runner up in the 2nd heat to take the overall. David Goosen went down early in heat 1 while going for the pass for the lead but salvaged points by making his way back up to 4th. A win in heat 2 would see Goosen take 2nd for the day and the points lead. Kerim Fitz-Gerald put in a solid performance going 2-4 for 3rd overall, but not what he would have wanted on a home track. Richard van der Westhuizen took 3rd place in both heats finishing in 4th for the day with Damon Strydom in 5th.
