Brazil’s Samuel Pupo and Hawaii’s Zoe McDougall surfed their way to victory at the Billabong Junior Series presented by All Aboard Travel in Ballito. The Junior Series surfing contest was the opening event of the 13 day Ballito Pro Surf Festival and featured the country’s best U18 surfers.
Samuel Pupo was the standout surfer in the U18 Men’s division throughout the 3 day event, consistently delivering high scores. His toughest test cam in the final when he met Ethan Fletcher. Fletcher took the lead at the half way point with a 7.83, but with a 8.67 in his score, Pupo needed just 5.80 for the win. He posted a 6.30 at the 5 minute mark and secured his victory.
It was an international encounter in the U18 Women’s final between Hawaii’s Zoe McDougall and Australia’s Pacha Luque-Light, and see-sawed back and forth with the lead changing after every ride. McDougall took and early lead with a 7.33 but was overtaken by Luque-Light’s 7.50. McDougall then posted an excellent 8.87 to take the win.
The U16, U14 and U12 boys and girls heats produced some exciting surfing.
The U12 Boys division delivered an exciting final with Kyra Bennie taking the win.
Mitch du Preez scored a perfect 10 point ride in the U14 Boys final, added to his 8.50 for the victory. Ceara Knight had a close battle against Zoe Steyn in the U14 Girls final but came out with the win in the end.
Luke Slijpen earned a well deserved victory in the U16 Boys final, with Kayla Noguera racking up another event title in the U16 Girls division.
