The Ballito Pro presented by Billabong took place at Willard Beach over the last week. Surfing fans were treated to a high scoring final between France’s Joan Duru and Australia’s Connor O’Leary.
In the final the lead constantly changed between the two as both surfers posted excellent scoring rides. O’Leary put down an explosive ride which included three vertical re-entries scoring a 9.20, ending in a 17.30 vs 15.80 win. O’Leary’s win saw him take home $40 000 and move up to No. 2 in the WSL rankings.
The best performance by a South African was the 5th place finish by Beyrick de Vries, which sees him jump from 98th to 12th in the rankings. De Vries also walked away R50 000 richer by winning the Wave of the Week and Expression Session awards. No doubt a career highlight weekend for the local surfer.
