2016 SupaDrift Series 06 Race Report

For the first time, Carnival City played host Africa’s premier drifting championship, the SupaDrfit Series. Drivers from across the country met to compete in the penultimate round if the season.

The addition of professional drifter, Red Bull’s Mad Mike Whiddett from New Zealand, to the program of events saw a mass of spectators join the day’s activities. Mad Mike put on an awesome display of sideways action before joining the qualifying briefing where George Myburgh was announced the top qualifier gong into the Top 32.

The Top 32 and Top 16 went by in a haze of wind and smoke. As the drivers entered the Top 8, pressure from the long day set in and errors were made resulting in a number of OMT’s.
Eric van Essyn was on form as he made his way through the field, beating Sean February then being awarded an automatic 3rd after opponent Adam Shefer had problems with his clutch.

After qualifying in 6th, Shane Gutzeit knocked out opponents to eventually fins himself in the final against Paolo Gouveia. The finalists rolled in for their final tandem which saw close quarter racing and everything left on the track. In the end it was Gutzeit that edges out Gouveia for the win.
