Round 5 of the 2016 SupaDrift Series took place at the infamous Dezzi Raceway on the South Coast of KZN. 35 of the country’s top drivers gathered to battle it out in this premier drifting championship.

Saturday kicked off with official practice followed by qualifying. 28 drivers qualified through and went on to battle for the Top 16. The usual suspects made it into the Top 16 but who would advance through the rounds to take the day’s top honours?
Aggression and pace picked up as drivers vied for positions into the next round. Des Gutzeit put on an impressive drifting performance to make it into the Top 8 where he would take on Paolo Gouveia. The fight between the two resulted in a OMT but Gouveia’s consistency and speed saw him advance to the semi’s.

George Myburgh made it through to the semi’s after his battle with Zein Hussein ended with Hussein’s gearbox being destroyed. Jim Mc Farlane also advanced to the semi after he beat Mathys Naude in the Top 8 round.
George Myburgh would face Shane Gutzeit in the final but an error in his run handed the win to Gutzeit. Jim Mc Farlane faced Paolo Gouveia in a spectacular semi that saw an OMT called. A rear clipped cone by Gouveia, sealed his fate and sent Mc Farlane to the final. Gouveia would finish in 3rd for the day.

The final had drifting fans on the edge of their seats as Jim Mc Farlane and Shane Gutzeit went to battle. An OMT was called and the rear clipping cone claimed its last victim of the day, Gutzeit. Jim Mc Farlane took the top step of the podium for the second time this season.
