Round 4 of SA’s premier Drifting championship took to the Rock Raceway over the weekend seeing drivers from all over the country battling it our for SupaDrift Series points.

A structural change in qualifying saw competitors do a single qualifying run in reverse order of the current championship standings. The new system worked well and 26 drivers scored points from a field of 33.
A series of clear-cut decisions between competitors kicked off the Top 16. Exciting match-ups saw Sean February vs Gavin Puren and Des Gutzeit vs Leeroy Frans, so exciting in fact that the judges sent them back out for a series of OMT’s. In the end it was February and Frans who progressed through to the Top 8. Championship contender Shane Gutzeit was sidelined early due to car trouble.

Paolo Gouveia, the 1st place qualifier, was on form and moved through to the semifinals after facing a determined George Myburgh in the Top 8. Zein Hussein went through to the semifinals after his battle with Jim Mc Farlane, and Richat Kahn went through after battling Riaan Stokes. The battle of the day would go to Leeroy Frans and Sean February after a nail-biting battle and two OMT’s, eventually seeing February advance after a small error by Frans.

Zein Hussein narrowly beat Paola Gouveia to make into the final. Sean February again found himself in an OMT situation against Richat Kahn, and advanced through to the final after Kahn’s machined died in the final corner.

With so many thrills and spills in the qualifying rounds, the final between Zein Hussein and Sean February resulted in a bit of an anti-climax. After their first run, Hussein led 10-1, February decided to save his car and coasted across the line handing the win to Hussein.

The drama at Round 4 of the SupaDrift Series has blown the championship wide open as it goes into its 5th instalment of the season at Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone in a few weeks time.
