2016 SA Motocross Nationals Terra Topia Race Report

The final event in the 2016 Monster Energy TRP Distributors SA National Motocross Championship was a massive day to finish off the series, which took place at the new Terra Topia track in Gauteng. With a host of overall titles still on the line, the day made for exciting bar-to-bar racing.

MX2 contender Anthony Raynard crashed hard early in the day unfortunately slowing him down for the rest of the races. David Goosen was again on form and lead both heats from start to finish to take the overall. Tristan Purdon put in a good performance to finish 2nd for the day. Kerim Fitz-Gerald didn’t have the best of starts and had to battle his way to make the podium.

Fitz-Gerald’s 3rd place finish saw him score enough points to claim the 2016 nationals MX2 title. Justin Thompson mixed it up with the top guys finishing 3-4 for 4th on the day. Joshua Mlimi didn’t run in the top 3 but finished off the season in 4th overall, which is a great result for the class rookie.

After a good battle in the MX1 division with Sacha Naude, it was all Tristan Purdon who took both heat wins, but for some reason Purdon was not entered into the nationals, only the regionals which was running on the same day, and he didn’t score national points.

Naude took the overall for the day and the 2016 national MX1 title. David Goosen found himself in the mix again and finished in 2nd for the day with Kerim Fitz-Gerald following in 3rd.

Nanda Clowes was on form in the Ladies division finding the front of the pack quickly and stayed there. The ever-present Brittany Cuthbert finished in 2nd and Toni Jardine took 3rd. Cuthbert’s 2nd place finish saw her take the 2016 national title.
