When it comes to a perfect, arena-like venue, nothing can beat the Lower Point at JBay. While her bigger brother, Supertubes, provides the thrills and spills and excitement as it zips along the rock shelf, Lower Point has more space, runs a little slower, and is so much of fun.

The Billabong SA Junior Champs had an epic day 2 at Lower Point, with the waves pretty much as good as they get out there. Three-to four-foot waves peeled down the point all day, with a solid east swell coming all the way down from the massive swell hitting Kwazulu-Natal at the moment. Waves like Bruces Beauties in nearby St Francis Bay turned on, as did Seal Point and a few other beachbreaks that like the East Swell.
Surfers standing out during the morning heats were Kai Woolf and Kirsty McGillivray, both from JBay. Kai on her backhand surfed excellently, following on her performance yesterday evening. Kirsty McGillivray also turned it on in her heat, leaving her competitors in the dust.

Sne Makhuba was another surfer, goofy-footer, who won her heat with ease, and in the U13 division young Kayla Nogeuira also won through.
The cheering squads hit their strides today, with the teams on the rocks cheering and supporting their surfers during each heat. The event also offers number of lucrative specialty awards totalling more than R15 000 for both surfers and their teams. These include the Billabong / Bad Billy’s Tag Team Paddle Battle, BOS Highest Heat Score, VonZipper Airshow and the Skullcandy Stay Loud Team Spirit awards.

Joe Webster was one surfer who powered his way through the round 2 repecharge. The young goofy-footer pushed hard in his heat to win through and advance to the third round heat tomorrow. Joe is a powerful young surfer from Kommetjie and his experience will pay off going forward in the event.
The rest of the contest waiting period looks good, all the way through to the final day on Sunday, when we will be crowning individual titles as well as Freedom Cup team titles.
