The 2016 Billabong SA Grommet Games took place at Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth over the weekend seeing the country’s best your surfers competing in 2-foot offshore conditions.
The Cape Town Surfriders Team made it five wins in a row as they beat the hosts, Nelson Mandela Bay, to take top honours and the Mandela Bay Trophy. The Cape Winelands team scored their best performance in the event’s history to take 3rd place overall. Last year’s runners up, eThekweni, had to settle for 4th place.
In the individual surfing categories, David Emslie and Gabriella Herbst won the Under 9 Boys and Girls division.
The Under 11 division was taken by Zia Hendricks (Girls) and C-Jay Posthumus (Boys).
Zoe Steyn and Daniel Emslie were the winners of the Under 13 Girls and Boys division.
Kaisea Button (Girls) and Daniel Orpen (Boys) took gold in the Under 15 division.
The Billabong SA Grommet Games’ primary focus is the transformation and development of the sport. The main focus is Surfing but participation in the Beach Flags, Paddle battle and Tag Team are an integral part of the event’s activities.
