Another excellent day of surf and competition at the Billabong Junior Series, Seal Point saw amazing performances from the best junior surfers in the country. The waves started off small and windy, and as the tide slowly moved in during the day so the surf improved and by the end of the day it was excellent waves running down the point at one of the most iconic right-hand point-breaks in South Africa.
James Ribbink was the stand-out of the day, getting the highest heat score of the day with an 18.5 score. His 9.5 ride and his 9.0 backup were both excellent rides and this Durban North surfer, who was competing in the U12 division, has a long and illustrious career ahead of him.
Sebastian Williams has also had a great event thus far, with some fast surfing and long and radical grab rail cut-backs on the walls of Seal Point.
In the girls divisions Kai Woolf from JBay was killing it on her backhand, along with Kirsty McGillivray from JBay and Sophie Bell from Durban. In her U16 Girls semi, Kai scored an amazing 9.6 for one wave, the second highest scoring wave of the day, for a long and perfect wave that she ripped on her backhand all the way through to the inside. Kai is looking a champion, and the U16 division is going to be a face-off between the two JBay girls.
Adin Masencamp has been another surfer on form, and his fast and loose natural-footed approach perfectly suits the waves of Seal Point. He is in the round of 8 semi-finals in the U18 Boys World Surf League series event and is looking at a good result.
One of the dark horse surfers of the event is Durban’s Bevan Willis. He is one of the more powerful surfers, and he consistently does the biggest moves and throws down some serious spray. He quietly gets the job done and he could easily go all the way to the finals, in the World Surf League Africa U18 Boys division.
With a fierce onshore predicted for the final day, the contest organisers hope to get through with an early start and finish off by lunchtime. We will be crowning winners in both the Billabong Junior Series event and the Billabong Junior Series Final.
