So the waves weren’t firing, from anyone’s standards, but they were highly contestable, and that’s all we need. Well, that’s all Adin Masencamp needed to secure victory in this first event in the Billabong Junior Series.
Masencamp was a popular winner of the U18 Boys division, and secured his berth in the SSA Ballito Pro Trials presented by Billabong along with second placed Jordy Maree. It was young Maree who held the lead in the beginning of the final, but Masencamp closed in on him with two great scores, and clinched it with a great closing wave.
The victory saw Masencamp overtake Jake Elkington into second place behind Maree on the WSL Africa Junior rankings He also took the early lead in the chase for the prestigious Billabong Junior Series U18 Boys crown that will be decided at the final event of the series.
The Girls U18 division had the only international in the event, with Zoe McDougal putting on an inspired performance and winning the heat against friend and host Kirsty McGillivray.
