SA’s best Under 18 surfers went to battle in overhead, chunky waves on Day 2 of the Billabong Junior Series. With prize money and points counting to the series, competitors pulled out all the stops.
Jordy Maree put on an impressive performance, surfing 14 waves in 25 minutes, winning his Round of 16 heat. Maree finished ahead of Ford van Jaarsveldt seeing the pair advance to the last eight in the U18 Boys division.
Koby Oberholzer took 2nd place behind Adin Masencamp in the last seconds of their heat.
The U18 Girls division was equally determined. Kai Woolf comfortably won her heat. Zoe McDougall, the only international surfer, advanced along with Taghiti Gericke. Kirsty McGillivray took the win ahead of Sophie Bell, and Kayla Nogueria ahead of Natasha van Greunen.
The U12 Boys strutted their stuff early in the day with Luke Thompson, James Ribbink and Dan Emslie winning their heats, moving onto the semi finals.
The U14 Girls division was equally competitive between the eight girls in their semi final match ups. Gabi Lailvaux and Zoe Steyn won their heats with S’nenhlanhla Makhubu and Kayla Nogueira finishing in the 2nd place spots, and moving through to the finals.
