Motocross is high up on the list of action sports gaining momentum in South Africa at the moment. With the profile of the sport on an all time high on the back of several major events in 2014, sponsors and teams are gearing up for a bigger and better 2015.

Yamaha established itself as a firm favourite in 2014, winning manufacturer of the year. For 2015, Yamaha has partnered with TLB Plant Hire and Monster Energy to form a very strong 11 rider team that will attempt to win 5 national championships through the various classes.
Some big names in the sport have been signed up for the 2015 season and all was revealed in a media launch we attended at Terra Topia motocross track in Fourways last week. The TLB Monster Energy Yamaha team set up their pits as it would appear on race days and the new team bikes, and colours were proudly displayed for all to see.

The team will be very strong in the premier MX1 class with Michael Kok, Sacha Naude, Caleb Tennant and Gerhard Grove looking to dominate. The team is even stronger in the MX2 class, with Michael Kok competing in this class as well, Tristan Purdon, Reid Sinnicks and Matthew Malan, who has returned from competition in the USA.

The team has also sprung a surprise in the MX2 class, by signing Nanda Swiegers who is SA’s number 1 lady rider. Nanda will represent SA in several rounds of the ladies world championships and is hoping to mix it with the very best male riders in SA to improve her skills.
In the younger classes we will see Dirco Van Der Westhuizen and Justin Thompson in the 125cc high school class. Justin will be competing in the USA for most of the season, but still hopes to represent his team well when he is in South Africa.

Seth Van Den Abeele will compete in the 12 to 15 year old pro-mini class and doesn’t have the advantage of team mates in this class. Fortunately, this is Seth’s 2nd year at pushing for the title, so does have experience on his side.
There is no doubt that this is a professional team who definitely look the part and we’re looking forward to seeing the results they produce throughout 2015.
