2014 SA Downhill MTB Cup Series Afriski

History was made on the 22nd April as the second round of the 2014 SA Downhill MTB Cup Series made its way to Afriski in Lesotho for the first time. The newly built course and high altitude of over 3000m gave new challenges for the riders.

Afriski is a Ski and Snowboarding resort situated in the Maluti mountains of Lesotho and mainly used during the winter season. Now, during the summer season a section of the slope has been changed into an awesome Downhill MTB course that has huge potential. Riders have use the T-Bar lift that takes them right to the top of the course while spectators can sit at the bottom in Gondola Cafe with view of the full run.

Tiaan Odendaal, the current Downhill National Champion owned the course and took the overall win in the Elite Men division with a time of 2:4.857. Stefan Garlicki finished behind Odendaal with a time of 2:06.523. Jonty Neethling finished off the podium with a time of 2:11.724.

In the Elite Women division it was Michane Viljoen who took the win in 3:23.239 ahead of 2nd place rider, Haley-Ann Adamson with a time of 3:24.054.

It was great to see a new course added to the series and we cannot wait to see the progress of it. I big shout out goes to Afriski and its staff for putting together such a great event and making sure everything ran smoothly.
