2013 CASA Cable Wake Tour Stop 2 Report

Warmbaths played host to the second stop of the 2013 CASA Cable Wake Tour and what a weekend it was. Near perfect weather all weekend long accompanied by some of the best Wakeboarding and Wakeskating the tour has seen. Saturday saw the qualifying runs go down in the heat of the day with perfect glass smooth water. Riders familiarised themselves with their runs as well as the obstacles that the course had to offer. Most held back their bigger tricks for the Sunday finals.

First up on the overcast Sunday for the finals where the Junior Men followed by the ladies followed by the Wakeskaters who unfortunately had to ride in the roughest water conditions of the day but this didn’t stop the riders from holding back. Bryanna Motepe stayed consistent in the Ladies division landing a few jumps to blind, Stalefish grabs and hitting the Kicker in her runs to take 3^rd place overall for the weekend. Candice Bacon, an always top spot contender, put a good run together with Heelside and Toeside 360’s, a Heelside 180 to blind and an Indy 180 off the kicker to secure 2^nd place. It was Melissa Colborne who took the competition by basically landing every 360 combination possible as well as throwing a Scarecrow off the kicker.

The Wakeskate division was exciting as always and saw a good battle take place between the top riders. Jacques Labuschagne put together an impressive run landing a few Shuv variations and a Boardslide Backside 270 off the Flatbar Rail and took 3^rd place. The battle for first place commenced between Kaylib Louw and Matti Buys. Kaylib landed a Switch Bigspin and a tight Boardslide Backside 270 off the Flatbar Rail amongst some other big tricks but it wasn’t enough to beat Matti’s Switch Bigspin, Regular Bigspin, Switch Frontside Shuv and Switch Backside Shuv. Kyle Holtzhauzen showed some awesome improvement and Sean Bacon impressed but it wasn’t enough to make the podium.

The Novice and Junior Men divisions where impressive and showed that the sport has some great talent coming up. Congrats to Perfect Dube for winning the Novice division and Jeanu du Plooy for winning the Junior Men division.

The Open Men division was the biggest division of the weekend with a host of riders able to throw down and make the podium. In the end it was Brad Morris, Brendan Tucker and Kaylib Louw that took the top 3 steps. Brad Morris had Raley’s, Backrolls, an Indy Krypt and a huge Tantrum off the kicker to put him in 3^rd place. Brendan Tucker had Frontflips, Raleys, a Backroll to Revert, a Roll to Revert and a krypt which put him in 2^nd place. Kaylib Louw impressed with the bigger tricks and took the top step of the podium by landing a Switch Frontflip, a Half Cab Roll, Backrolls and Raleys and a 540 off the kicker. A new comer to the Cable Wake Competition was Snowboarder Neil Freemantle who came in an impressing 4^th place.

The Pro Men final was insane with huge and new tricks being thrown into the riders runs. To take the podium in the Pro division riders had to have perfect passes but with the Pro’s putting all they had into their runs this wasn’t always the case. There were a few riders that went down attempting to land huge spin tricks and this unfortunately put them out of the running for the top 3 spots. Justin Selby was one of the favourites to take the win by sticking a flawless first pass which included a S-Bend to Blind, a Roll to Blind a Frontflip and a full pass over the Rooftop Rail and Flatbar Rail but its wasn’t enough to beat the 1^st and 2^nd place runs. Justin Mitri threw down and had a Raley to Blind, Backroll Mobe, Front to Blind and a big Tantrum off the kicker in his run which put him in contention but just wasn’t enough to beat Jason Colborne’s run. Jason was consistent and stuck a S-Bend, Backroll to Mobe, Raley to Blind and, like Mitri, a huge Tantrum off the Kicker to put him in 1^st place.
