Vanessa Holliday is a well renowned Electronic Dance Music DJ in the South African music scene and she has just dropped her first EP called “Deep layers” which features two awesomely pulsating tracks. See what Vanessa had to say in our interview with her about the new EP and what it involves, also have a listen to the tracks while browsing through the interview.
You have just released your new EP called Deep Layers. Tell us about the EP and how long have you been working on it?
This is my first EP release of many more to come. This EP was inspired by my cavernous love and passion for electronic dance music and producing. It’s deep incorporating the many layers of my creative expression.
What can fans expect from the new tracks on this EP?
A side features “Berlin Strasse”. My inspiration behind the track “Berlin Strasse” came from my visit to Berlin, I have fallen madly in love with the diversity of the city and the underground scene that goes along with it. Lo-fi analogue drums from the basement with sine blips dropping down creating this moody atmospheric track, infused with subtle 5th chord tech progressions, over laced with vocals, synth stabs and lush pads from the backyards of Berlin.
B side features “Black Beauty”, another heartfelt track layered with dark deep and sophisticated sonic textures combined with a groovy guitar riff.
Give us some insight into the name of the EP as well as the names of the tracks?
I called it “Deep Layers” as the name says it all. The tracks are deep and incorporates the many layers of my creativity. The names were inspired from my trip to Berlin and the very essence of beauty.
Which track means the most to you and why?
Both them of course. But I lean more towards Berlin Strasse as I wrote and spoke the lyrics in this track. The words can relate to anyone but for me it was the Berlin Road that inspired me.
Explain the feeling you get when you are in the DJ box playing music for the masses?
It’s my happy place, a place of emotion, freedom and creative expression, where you connect with peoples moods and share an experience.

What has been one of your all time favourite gigs?
Sunday Funk in JHB, the crowds energy just keeps you going, landed up playing a 5 hour set, utter bliss!
What type of crowd do you enjoy playing to?
To a crowd that knows their artists, follow artists, love to dance and stay up to date with EDM.
Where in the world has your DJing career taken you and where would you still like to see it take you?
I have played all over Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya also played in India and Ibiza. I would really like to visit the US and play Amnesia or DC10 in Ibiza.
What would be one of your ultimate clubs/ festivals to play at?
I would like to play at Sonar in Barcelona and ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event).
How often do you get to play gigs? And at which venue to you enjoy doing your thing at the most?
Well I have my residency at The Bungalow in Clifton in the summer, its every Friday or Saturday but for the winter its only every second Sunday. This is a place where I can play the more softer side to my sound with beautiful melodies, down tempo chill out. Summer will kick off again at The Bungalow the end of October.
Will you be doing any type of tour to promote the EP?
Well I am in Berlin at the moment for a month but when I’m back ill be sure to do a party in JHB & CT.
Can we expect and music videos for any of the tracks?
Not for these tracks but I am in the process of doing a music video on another track to be released later on in the year.
What’s next for Vanessa Holliday?
I will be releasing 2 albums towards the end of the year. The Bungalow album and my own. Be sure also to check out the event I put together over Women’s Day in August called “That’s What She Said”.
