Wakeboarding has for a long time been a sport where riders needed a boat to participate but the introduction of Cableways and Winches have changed that. Rusty Hook Restaurant and Bar in Honeydew, Gauteng played host to the Rusty Winch Jam, a Wakeboarding jam created to bring the sport to the people and show just how easy it is to get involved.
Rusty Hook has the perfect sized body of water to introduce such a jam and it rocked. A winch was used to pull the riders from one side of the dam to the other over either the Kicker or Slider obstacles that were placed in the water. Riders spent the day throwing down in front of the cheering spectators.
The only downfall of using the Winch is the time it takes to get the handle back to the starting point for the next rider. A 2 tower portable cable system has been developed and will be used in the near future at these type of jams, eliminating the time between each rider and giving riders the chance to do more than one pass over the obstacles.
The Rusty Winch Jam featured some of SA’s top riders including Damien Laird, Marius Labuschagne, Martin Lombard, Deidre Van Niekerk, Byron Brett and Justin Selby – and was just a taste of what’s to come. Keep posted for the next jam coming to a suited body of water near you.
A big thanks goes to Rusty Hook, Positive Energy Drink, CTRL Wake SA, Burn Industries and CWB Boards for making this jam possible, and to Damien Laird, Kaylib Louw, Darren Turner, Ronny Tucker and Bradley Morris for their hard work and putting the event together.
