Prime Circle have stamped their name on the South African music industry as one of the greatest rock bands the country has ever produced. Their illustrious career has brought them to this point, the release of their brand new and 6th album entitled Let The Night In. We chatted to lead singer, Ross Learmoth about the new album, its sound and Prime Circle’s upcoming South African, and European tours. See what he had to say.
Congrats on the release of your 6th album. Give us some insight into Let The Night In?
Thank you, Let The Night In was the most fun we’ve ever had making an album, we worked with great people and loved playing the songs. Also recording in Johannesburg where we live made it easier.
How does this album differ from your previous 5?
We wanted to hear a definite progression in the band as well as change the usual comparisons people had of our sound, pushing out more synth sounds, using different guitars and amps, not using any drum samples. Everything was different with regards to approach – also working with Denholm Harding and Brendon Russouw made a big difference. They are a great team.
How do you think your fans are going to relate to this?
I think they will be happy to hear the band in a different light, it’s not too far of a departure but enough to feel right.
What were some of the highs during the making of Let The night In?
Having over twenty of our friends in the studio singing gang vocals, Marco and his wife Rene having a baby, and the fact that we got to make another album.
If you look back to the making and recording of your first ever album and compare it to the new album. What has changed?
We were all a bit nervous and unsure the first time round. The studio can be quite a daunting place. As time goes on you start to become more confident and enjoy yourself completely.
Which tracks are your favourite and why?
They all are. I honestly can’t choose a favourite.
Sum up Let the Night in in 10 words?
A journey of stories, with rises and falls. The best.
You are set to do a South African tour as well as a European tour over the next few months. How will these tours differ from some of your previous ones?
With the new album there is a new energy to the band, off and on stage. So the shows feel more energetic, we are having a blast and I think that brings the shows to a new level for us. Also Paris and Spain for the first time allows a feeling of growth and moving forward.
What can your South African music fans expect from your launch tour?
We will be embarking on our first arena tour in SA, as well as playing all around the country. We are adding to the production and songs to make it more of an event. Stand alone gigs, in arenas. Two in Johannesburg, two in Bloemfontein and one in Grand West in Cape Town. It’s going to be a blast.
Playing in Spain and Paris for the first time during your European tour, what are your expectations?
We are not expecting anything to be honest, we will just take it as it comes. We are very excited though and are just going to play and have fun.
What are you looking forward to most during the tours?
Spreading the new album, it’s always a thrill/ nerve racking to play new stuff and see it connect with people
Any words for anyone who will be attending your shows during the tours?
