Krank’d Up Music Festival is the brainchild of Turnings Tricks Entertainment. In previous years Turning Tricks have brought us Protest The Hero, Affiance and Dead Letter Circus. In it’s fourth year, we had the pleasure of watching the mighty 36 Crazyfists and progressive metal band Monuments opened up by Van Coke Kartel, Raptorbaby, Hokum, Ohgod, Zombies ate my Girlfriend, Dirty Moonshine, Savage Lucy, Shutup! It’s Sunday, Riddlebreak, Satanic Dagga Orgy, With Dawn, Climate Control, Made for Broadway, Red Helen, Only Forever, Octainium and Deity’s Muse.
Riddlebreak was one of the bands I missed but following their posts on social media, they were super stoked to be playing for their hero’s. It’s a lifelong dream that has been realised and unforgettable moment for them. They recently did a music video for their song “Zero point Energy”. Something to keep an eye out for the very near future.
During their show, Raptorbaby debuted their latest track “The Lost” which they recently did a music video for.
Red Helen also debuted their latest track “Vartaman”

Deity Muse’s opened for Monuments, got to catch their new song “Satellites” which was a well-deserved response from the crowd.
Whilst enjoying all the local bands with their rocking sets, the crowd reserved their energy for the International bands.
Monuments
These guys have come a long way since starting as a side project of John Browne (guitar of Fellsilent) and Josh Travis (guitar:- The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza). The band has since released two albums “Gnosis” in 2012 and “The Amanuensis” in 2014, and have spearheaded their genre with successful tours around the globe. With only South America and Asia left to tour before they can say they’ve toured the whole world.
When Monuments got on stage, I was standing at the back taking notes. When the first song started, so did the moshpits. Before I knew it, the moshpit swallowed me and I was standing right in front catching singer, Chris Barretto on his crowd surfing expedition. Doing songs from both their albums to date, giving us the heavier of their songs. It felt like a stampede at Oppikoppi with the dust kicking up as the moshpits raged on for the rest of the night. They put so much energy into their performance.

36 Crazyfists
They completed their seventh album “Time and Trauma” last year and released it in February this year. For the first time in their 21 year career, The Four-piece Alaskan, Metalcore band comes to South Africa and puts one amazing show. These guys only have South America left to conquer then they can say they’ve seen the world!

Doing some crowd faves like Slit Wrist theory, they had the crowd on their feet going absolute balls-to-wall crazy. At the end of their set, the crowd were chanting, WE WANT MORE, WE WANT MORE, WE WANT MORE! They did two more songs, of which one of them the drummer was replaced by local drummer Jade Neebe. Looking around after all was said and done, everyone left with big smiles on their faces!
