With the easing of lockdown and the reinstatement of racing, David Goosen literally has the feeling of being Uncaged. With preparation underway for the remainder of the Motocross season, we bring you Goosen’s latest video part and catch-up interview below…
Now that the we have reached Level 2 of our Lockdown, how does it feel be be ‘Uncaged’?
I guess that’s exactly where we came up with the name, it really feels like we are getting uncaged and getting back into the normal swing of things, and it’s exciting.
What’s your take on the year 2020?
I definitely did not think 2020 would go like this. I knew it was a good year for me with a positive vibe, which I am glad I’ve hung onto throughout these tough times.
How much did you daily routine change during lockdown?
I basically went from 6/7 days a week flat out with my full time job, riding and training to doing absolutely nothing for the first 3 week period. We were just doing final prep for Round 2 of the MX Nationals when we hit lockdown. It was really fun being at home for the first 2-3 weeks and even though I was bored I still had fun and didn’t feel like things were so serious but little did we know…
What did you do to make sure you kept in shape and motivated?
With a day to spare before going into the full on lock down I managed to find a second hand spinning bike, there was literally not one available anywhere, so I was lucky to find one and also at a great price. I pedalled on that quite a bit during the beginning stages and as soon as we were allowed out for exercise from 6-9am, it was so nice to get out and cycle outdoors. I did some yoga and body weight training to keep up some strength work as well.
What did you find you ended up missing the most during lockdown?
Honestly, I really missed a good coffee from Seattle or somewhere like that, my coffee at home is nowhere near as nice. I missed the freedom of being out and just normal life, I actually still miss a bit of that to this day. Things are quite a bit different especially socially. I’m sure it made us appreciate a lot of things in life that’s for sure.
Now that racing is back on the cards, what are you looking forward to most?
It’s exciting times. I look forward to being with and around the team again. I look forward to carrying on what we started so long ago at Round 1 in Feb.
What’s are your thoughts on the last rounds of the 2020 MX Nationals being double headers?
It’s very different I guess. We used to do two-day nationals about four years ago, which I always enjoyed and felt like I got better as the weekend went on, so I’m not against the format at all. I guess we have decisions to make on doing both classes or focusing on one class. I worked it out the other day, I will end up doing four practice sessions and eight races over two days if I do both classes. You’d better hope we didn’t sit around during lock down [laughs].
What are you goals for the reminder of the season, and going into 2021?
I really enjoyed winning a couple races again in the beginning of the year and would love to carry that momentum through. It has been a long time, so it’s basically it’s like starting over again but I will make myself as ready as can be. I need to make some sacrifices to get to the tracks we are racing for a bit of practice before the big weekends and that will give me a better shot at being competitive with the full time riders who will definitely be spending a lot of time at the tracks before.
