Brochella presents Attila Live – Riddlebreak Interview

Caught somewhere between Johannesburg and Pretoria, you will find Riddlebreak, who have been setting stages alight for the better half of a decade across South Africa. The 6-piece progressive metalcore act sprinkled with classical elements is set to perform alongside Attila (USA), Atlantic South and Red Helen on Friday 14 June at Rumours Rock City.
We had a chat with guys and gals of the band about the upcoming show, their music and who would win in a fight between their members.

Riddlebreak has seriously taken the metal scene by storm lately by making it to the finals of the Wacken SA leg and having performed alongside many internationals. Where to from here?
Riddlebreak has always dreamt of breaking out onto an international platform, but it’s easier said than done. For now, we’ll keep sacrificing sleep to the gods of prog until our next album is done.

We heard Attila is one of Jade’s (vocals) favourite bands. What’s he going to do on the night when he meets Fronz and the band?
“I have been preparing myself. Deep meditation and plenty of physical and mental exercise, as to not scream like a 5-year-old girl meeting Justin Bieber. I’ll most likely tell them all how awesome they are, ask Fronz to adopt me and after he says no, I’ll just settle for a selfie with him. Then die happy.” – Jade Osner.

Having incorporated so many different musical elements into the band, how does the songwriting process work the band?
Our song writing process is quite organic: we feed it some leaves, give it a scarf, privilege and VOILA! A controversial song is born.

How has the change in venues and media impacted the band on reaching a new audience in South Africa?
With the loss of venues over the last few years, it has gotten harder to reach new audiences. But, with a growing number of online streaming sites we can still get our music out there. With each new year there’s a new generation of fans starting to go out so there’s always a little element of reintroducing ourselves, but social media makes the transition a lot easier. It’s unfortunate that there aren’t as many venues as there used to be, but on the upside more people will go to the same place. Bigger crowds = Bigger throw downs.

Who would win in a fight – Jade (vocals) or Gareth (Rhythm Guitar)?
We’ve been asked this question before. We almost get the feeling that people want to see this happen, and for enough money it might. To answer your question though, no one would win. When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object the space time continuum breaks and the universe as we know it is torn asunder.

Speaking of Gareth, he also plays for Hiraeth and Human Nebula where he does vocals. Has there ever been talks of integrating him into Riddlebreak more on vocals?
Gareth used to do quite a bit of the backing vocals when we started out, but as time went by we challenged ourselves with trickier riffs, which lead Gareth to naturally falling away from backing all together, because some of our shit takes both his brain cells to play.

If you could callout one artist/ person/ product on stage without any repercussions, who or what would it be and why?
As a band we strive towards the “live and let live” mentality, making friends is far more beneficial (and fun!) than making enemies. With that being said, under enough pressure we might crack and say something like “the writers for the 8th season of Game of Thrones need to be flushed down the toilet along with the series they sent there”.

Does pineapple go on pizza?
We’re sure a lot of people quite enjoy it, but we say NAY. As Fronzilla himself puts it, “Pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza you f#@king piece of sh!t, why would you do this to me!?”

Which bands in our scene are really stepping it up at the moment?
This one is a little tricky. There’s quite a few local artists really kicking up some dust in their own way of doing things, and we appreciate them all. But we suppose you want some names, so to mention a few; Ohgod, The Drift, Facing The Gallows, Fenrus Wolf, Last One Alive, (Gareth’s other bands which are Hiraeth and Human Nebula [laughs]).

Lastly, which track are you most amped to see Attila perform live at Rumours Rock City?
About That Life, White Lightning, Shots For The Boys, Middle Fingers Up, Guilty Pleasures, Let’s Get Abducted, Proving Grounds, Break Shit, Rage, Pizza, Payback.
There are WAAAY too many to pick just one.
