The season opener of the 2021 South African National Motocross Championship took place over the weekend at Terra Topia in Johanneburg. Exciting racing provided a good kick-off to what is set to be a competitive season.

MX1 Start
Johan Vogelesang took the early lead in Heat 1 with Anthony Raynard in pursuit, before Jesse Wright took over the lead. David Goosen was on the charge and soon passed Raynard to then fight Wright before moving ahead for the win. Tristan Purdon, after an average start, moved up to follow Goosen home from Raynard.
In Heat 2 Purdon made no mistakes and went on to take the race win, while Raynard beat Goosen to 2nd ahead of Wright, Bradley Cox and Jayden Proctor. Purdon heads into the next round with the red plate and a two point championship lead.

Tristan Purdon
Tristan Purdon was on the move and took a come-from-behind win from Cameron Durow in the opening race. Anthony Raynard, David Goosen, Dalton Venter and Jayden Proctor were all in the mix battling for podium positions.

Purdon made it a double win by taking the second Heat over Goosen, Raynard, Durow, Venter and Leonard du Toit.

Grant Frerichs
A good and competitive mix of racing saw Grant Frerichs take the overall in the end, ahead of Dwayne Kleynhans in 2nd and Ian Topliss in 3rd.

Miguel de Waal
With 27 bikes lined up on the gate, Jonathan Mlimi picked up where he left off, took a couple of laps to reel in and pass Ethan Hoffman and clear off to win the opening heat. Hayden Tully ended up on 2nd while Miguel de Waal and Mark-Anthony Filip also moved ahead of Hoffman for 3rd and 4th respectively.
De Waal then sped to a second Heat win ahead of Tully, Mlimi, Luke Grundy and Hoffman, to take the day’s overall victory.

Leah Heygate
Leah Heygate went 2-1 for the overall while Kayla Raaff went 1-2 for 2nd on the day. Jadene de Lima rounded off the podium in 3rd place.

Lucca Mynhardt
Lucca Mynhardt went 2-1 to take the overall win for the day. Trey Cox took first Heat win but finished in 5th Heat 2 to end up 2nd overall. Neil van der Vyver, who has just moved up to the class, rounded off the podium in 3rd overall.

Tyler Petersen
Matthew Correia led Tyler Petersen and Ashton Martin to an opening heat win. Petersen then won the second race from Andrea Mynhardt and Correia, ultimately seeing him secure the day’s victory.

There was drama as a trio of midfield riders were excluded for ‘jumping under yellow flags’ in the first Heat. In the end it was Blake Frost who took the overall win from Aiden Henley in 2nd and Nicol Smit in 3rd.

Champion Trenton Kretzman wasted no time to move ahead of Rayden Woolls for the win in Heat 1. Maxwell Fourie, Ross Mackenzie, Aiden Retief and Travis Liddell followed. As it was in other classes, Woolls struck back to beat Kretzmann in Heat 2 and go even in the title chase. Casper van Zyl was 3rd from Retief, Fourie and MacKenzie.
