SupaDrift Series 2012 – Event 01 Results

The SupaDrift Series Event 01, hosted at Zwartkops Raceway on the 25^th February 2011, was an absolute hit amongst drivers, fans and attendees alike!

SA’s top drifters showcased their sideways sliding skill on the Zwartkops tarmac and masqueraded off in serious rubber burning style to achieve first points in a 9-stop series; the winning prize amongst honour and bragging rights is cash and drivers were itching to grab a fist full! The Motorsports South Africa (MSA) endorsed event is ever-growing in popularity and certainly changing the mindsets of traditional motorsports followers with the ability to watch 100% of the race all the time.

32 x competitors started the day’s affair and battled the judges and the drift event criteria to qualify for a Supa 16 spot. New elements of surprise were added to the mix of judging criteria; when drivers faced for the first time, the ‘Liqui-Moly’ wall instead of an usual cone or clipping point; this is made up of tyres stacked and appropriated in such a position that drivers, if not skilled enough, were going to wreck rear ends of the vehicles and take home some bumper debris. The cornering and skidding slides of the rear wheel drive vehicles directed by South Africa’s, and Mozambique’s talented drift pilots, held their own and shattered previous skill levels with higher speeds, better lines and the formidable angle of the cars as they channeled the corners increasingly so.

Drivers making huge impacts were Achilles Tyres Adam Scheffer; and Black Insurance, Rockstar Energy sponsored driver Wade van Zummeren, who won the coveted title in 2011, both placed in 2^nd and 3^rd position respectfully at the end of the qualifying rounds. Jason Webb coming out tops in the qualifying rounds for Monster Energy.

At the end of the day however, Pretoria’s afternoon nemesis pulled into the event when only the first round of eliminations had taken place and heavy rains ensued. This left the organizers and judges with a grim task to rummage up the scores and produce a result for the days driving…
