This past weekend saw the 4th round of the Supadrift Series take place at the Zwartkops Raceway. Held over 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) and hosted by the Gauteng Motor Show the 35 strong drivers throwing their cars around the drifting circuit were definitely the main attraction of the weekend. Capacity packed grandstands were treated to some intense, high octane action with nonstop thrills and spills.
True to form, the Zwartkops Raceway provided the perfect track for a fast and furious competition. Entry speeds in to the first corner were the quickest in the country, reaching 140kpm; this was thanks to the organisers reversing the direction competitors took around the track.
The qualifying round concluded with a new entry at number one: Mallaz Customs Mike Radloff from East London, followed by the 18 year old drifter Jason Webb.
Semi-final tandem battles saw Webb face Liqui Moly’s Shane Gutziet, and finish victorious. Whilst KZN’s Paolo Gouveia faced the Gauteng veteran, Alcohol Killer’s Jim McFarlane, with McFarlane taking top points to secure his place in the final against Webb.
The final between Webb and McFarlane was full of tyre smoke and explosions of red dust as the drifters each took their turn to lead. McFarlane lead the first run with Webb stuck to his tail from initiation. Both drifters dialed in from great angles and Webb remained door-to-door with McFarlane throughout the run. At the second clipping point, McFarlane dropped one wheel in the dirt which Webb mirrored.
With Webb to lead, a quick start put distance between him and McFarlane going into initiation. McFarlane closed the gap on the first clipping point and remained tight on his tail. On the final corner Webb dropped one wheel in the dirt and pulled away to the finish line. It was Webb’s aggressive and precise driving that saw him scoop the title of SD04 champion. The win places Webb at the top of the log in the series and 49 points ahead of his mentor Otto Graven, who is in second place.
Race standings going in to round five of the AutoTrader SupaDrift Series, set to take place at the Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone, 29 of June, is as follows:
1st – Jason Webb
2nd – Otto Graven
3rd – Shane Gutzeit
4th – Wade van Zummeren
