The first annual Brochella Festival is set to take place at Rumours Rock City on 15 April. We caught up with State Society, one of the many bands performing at Brochella, to talk about the festival and more.
Give us some insight into State Society and its members?
Our five piece ensemble of individuals is comprised of Clifford Barnard on vocals and guitar, Marchant Pretorius on guitar and backing vocals, Mike Pocock on bass, Justin Rae on keyboard and guitar and Petri Burger on drums. We are quite a diverse bunch of dudes with very different tastes in music. Everything from blues, pop straight through to the most heaviest of metal.
How would you best explain your sound and genre?
We like to call it pop rock, but we’ve been labelled ‘dad rock’, ‘beardcore pop rock’ and ‘indie rock’. We just like to sound like State Society so that’s pretty much how we describe it.
What have been some of your highlight performances?
So many to talk of! Probably Oppikoppi and STRAB have been our most fun festivals. We also always have a great time at Rumours Rock City, Sundowners, Aandklas and Arcade Empire. Mystic Boer in Bloem is always a fun beer-fuelled party.
If you could play any show/ gig/ festival in the world, which would it be?
That’s a tough one as we are all quite divided. Cliff and Marchant would probably want to perform at Leeds and Glastonbury while Mike, Justin and Petri would pick Download. Locally, we’ve always wanted to jam at Rocking The Daisies and FORR in Mozambique, so we will work towards that.
Which local band would you like the opportunity to collaborate with?
So many to choose from, as the immense talent in this country is just insane. If we had to put it down to one artist, it would most likely be Dan Patlansky. That guy is a genius.
Where do you draw your inspiration?
Everyday life. Getting up in the morning. Coffee. Chicks with great assets – you know, the usual [laughs].
What is a day in the life of State Society like?
We all have day jobs so we handle those like pros. We rehearse as often as possible, but we are very spread out. Cliff, Justin and Mike are in Joburg, Marchant in Westonaria and Petri works in Sasolburg. Getting together isn’t the most simple task, but we make it work. We should actually spend more time together, but we’re worried that we will begin to hate each other even more.
What are your thoughts on the upcoming Brochella Festival?
It’s kiff AF! We are just excited to share the stage with the bands and perform at the finest venue in the land, on the main stage.
Which of the bands on the lineup are you looking forward to seeing at the festival?
All of them. We will be there from the start frolicking in front of the stage for every set. It’s such a cool and diverse rock line up so there is something for every fan of live music.
What can fans expect from you at Brochella?
We are aiming to perform our new single ‘Reflections Of Summer’ for the first time at Brochella. We might also do a colab with one of the frontmen from one of the other bands so people will just have to come and see for themselves.
What would be your main reason not to miss Brochella be?
It’s a first time festival and if it’s supported big from the start, then there will be more awesome and bigger Brochellas in the future. We’ve heard that Rumours Rock City will also have a little makeover for the day.
We would like to thank all those awesome people who have supported us over the years and LW Mag for interviewing us, Fred and Stephen at Rumours Rock City, Warren at Plug Music Agency and all our band friends. You guys are super cool. See you all at Brochella!
