Oakley’s One Wave Wonder Winner!

Five months of competition. 150 entries. There can only be one winner. And that is Grant “Twiggy” Baker whose massive barrel ride at secret reef secured him the win in the first Oakley One Wave Wonder and a cool R60 000. Congrats from the LW team to Baker for the thick tube ride that netted the first prize for Ride of the Season!

And the story of this win goes as follows…

After leaving a few of the sets at the ‘Boland Reef,’ Grant eventually paddled into a big one, and after a critical take-off and drop, with Twig nearly losing it at the bottom of the wave, he recovered and pulled straight into a giant barrel. Completely disappearing for a few seconds, Twiggy emerged in a cloud of white water and spray to claim what he described as “one of the best waves of my life.” The wave was enough to score the majority of votes from the event judges as well as from the voting public to secure him first place in the fiercely contested event, edging out previous monthly winners Jordy Smith, Shaun Joubert, Deen Hill and Brendan Gibbens in the process.

“When this competition was first launched, I knew it was going to take something pretty special to beat the top guys like Jordy who can do amazing things on virtually any average wave” said Twiggy, holding up his big cheque for 50G’s, the biggest single wave prize purse ever exclusively for South African surfers. “So we went looking for the biggest, best barrels we could find.”

The cherry on top was the fact that Twig’s better half Kate Lovemore was the videographer of the wave, and thus wins the trip for two to G-Land – the incredible Garajagan Surf Camp at one of the best waves in the world, situated on the edge of the Javanese jungle. The trip is valued at over R30 000 and was made possible by event co-sponsor All Aboard Surf Travel – All Aboard
