The first annual Brochella Festival is set to take place at Rumours Rock City on 15 April. We caught up with I AM, one of the many bands performing at Brochella, to talk about the festival and more.
Give us some insight into the band and its members?
I AM is an Alternative – Pop band from Pretoria consisting of four individuals that have come together to create the music that appeals to people with various musical taste. Although quite new to the scene I AM stands tall with the best of them being recognized for both live and studio performances. The band has achieved accolades which would include three songs on both local and international stations top 10 charts as well as performing at well renowned festivals in South Africa. One simple write up is certainly not enough to capture the emotion and energy that is brought forward by the entity that is I AM.
How would you best explain your sound and genre?
Well if we had to put a label on it we’d definitely have to say alternative pop rock.
What have been some of your highlight performances?
Has to be Oppikoppi, words can’t explain the experience of not only being able to perform there but also just being able to attend the festival itself. We were also lucky enough to be included in the lineup for the Gauteng leg of the Tweak reunion show which is nothing short of amazing.
If you could play any show/ gig/ festival in the world, which would it be?
Glastonbury, [laughs] because it’s Glastonbury. I don’t think we have to explain why.
Which local band would you like the opportunity to collaborate with?
Hands down Zebra & Giraffe but as we know they broke up last year, so if they could get back together that would be great. When it comes to bands that are currently active we’d have to say Thieve.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Our inspiration comes from all walks of life. We write mostly about the things we go through on a day to day basis. So for us to share our deepest and truest emotions with our fans is more than we could ask for.
What is a day in the life of the band like?
Day jobs and bad jokes [laughs].
What are your thoughts on the upcoming Brochella Festival?
Well what can we say, great idea with an amazing line up, definitely going to be one not to miss.
Which of the bands on the lineup are you looking forward to seeing at the festival?
All the bands on the line up are bringing so much to this event, it’s quite impossible to pin point one specifically.
What can fans expect from you at Brochella?
Lots of energy, dancing and whole lot of smiles. We’re all about spreading the love.
What would your main reason not to miss Brochella be?
The main reason why we as musicians can still do what we do. The music lovers that take the time to spend their hard earned money to come and support the immense local talent and local venues.
We’d like to send a shout out to the following companies that we’d had the pleasure of working with as a band as well as individually; True life clothing, Anti-Motion Creative, Thrashers Skate park and New Hope Clothing.
