Female Celeb – Interview with Hayley Owen

-
It’s been a while since we’ve done a Female Celeb feature, so we decided its about time we get one up as its been way too long. We caught up with South African actress Hayley Owen who plays Angie on The Wild. See what Haley has to say about the show, her character and the future:

Full Name: Hayley Verna Owen

Nickname: Hayles or Hoi

Hometown: JHB

Pet peeves: Waking up early and Crime

Words to live by: Nothing comes without sacrifice.

Readers may know you from some TV commercials. What TV commercials have you been featured in?
There have been a couple. I have done two for KFC – KFC adverts manage to keep most South African actors fed. And then another you might remember is the DSTV ad where a guy picks me up in a club and then bursts into the Haka.

What has been the most intimidating shoot and why?
Probably my first day on the set of The Wild. I come from a theatre background so acting while considering three cameras was a new experience for me.

Tell us a little about your acting career and what led you to be “Angie” in The Wild?
Well I studied Drama for four years at Wits University. After graduating I toured the country performing Educational Theatre which led me to an internship in London. I spent two years in London working and traveling. I did all sorts there. One of my jobs was a presenter on a late night Casino Channel. Once back in SA I started auditioning and my agent called me up with the role for Angie, I have been happy ever since!

How would you say “Angie” is different to Hayley Owen?
I wish I was as hard core as Angie. Angie doesn’t care what others thinks and says it like it is. We are both very ambitious and career orientated but she is a lot more confrontational than I am.

What is a day like in the world of filming on set for The Wild?
Well if you are in the first few scenes of the day we usually meet at 5am to be shuttled out to the farm which is an hour out of Jo’burg, just outside Heidelberg. Its then hair and make-up while eating breakfast and running lines before being driven to set. Every week is totally different depending on your story line. Sometimes there are night shoots until midnight and sometimes you are home by 10am.

How many takes does it normally take to get the perfect shot?
On The Wild we are on a very tight schedule so you seldom get more than two takes to get the perfect shot. We shoot about 14 scenes a day.

What’s next for you after The Wild?
Well I will certainly be auditioning for upcoming films and TV shows but I am also looking forward to devoting more time to the company my sister and I started, Actorvate. Actorvate produces Educational Roadshows that tour around to schools and use theatre to deliver positive messages. We also provide performers for marketing campaigns and corporate events.

What is your ultimate dream for your acting career?
My dream would be to be the lead in a prime time TV series like Revenge, Dexter or House.

Who would you most like to co-star with?
Anthony Hopkins, Jack Nickolson or Kevin Spacey

What do you do with your off time?
I catch up on TV shows like Suites and Downton Abbey or go for dinners and drinks with friends. I also love a good braai and watching rugby and cricket.
