The teams for the Billabong SA Champs, set to take place in Cape Town Thursday 24 – Sunday 27 May, have started to arrive in the Cape, and the wave predictions for the weekend are looking good.
According to veteran South African swell forecaster Spike from www.wavescape.co.za there is going to be a cold front sweeping past Cape Town from Thursday to Saturday, bringing fresh northerly winds and good swell. Thursday will see the biggest swell of the contest period, with possible six to eight-foot surf during the afternoon. The rest of the contest period sees slightly smaller swell, with light north-westerly to south-westerly winds. Sunday, the final day of the event, is set to be a beautiful day in the Cape, with no wind, clear skies and steady three to four-foot surf persisting throughout the day.
The teams will gather for the opening function at the Kommetjie Primary School on Wednesday May 23 at 7 for 7:30PM and the first rounds will start at 8:30AM on Thursday May 24. As this contest uses a mobile format, anyone wishing to know the daily contest venue can log onto www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za after 7:30AM to find out.
