Round 5 of the 2017 SupaDrift Series took place at Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone, seeing the country best drivers gather to battle it out for valuable season points. Gymkhana GRiD champion Luke Woodham, here for the SA event launch, was also in attendance to compete in a rented Nissan 200SX.
Friday’s practice didn’t go well for championship contender Jason Webb, when during his second last run of the day crashed his Monstang into the tyre wall, writing his car off. It looked as if Webb’s shot at the championship was over, but fellow competitor Mikey Skelton came to the rescue and let Webb borrow his Rockford Fosgate 350Z for the remainder of the weekend. Webb went on to qualify in 1st place for the Top 16.
The Top 16 was exciting as ever with top class drifting action, close calls and several OMT’s being called. Judges had their hands full making the right call from Top 16 to Top 8 battles and finally into the Final 4.
Jason Webb went up against Jim McFarlane while Gavin Puren faced Paolo Gouveia Jnr. Wins went to McFarlane and Puren pitting Webb and Gouveia against each other for the 3rd lace battle. It was a tough battle and after the judges call for an OMT the 3rd place was claimed by Jason Webb.
Jim McFarlane versus Gavin Puren in the final battle of the day. Both drifters put down incredible runs but McFarlane managed to best Puren’s runs in the finals for the overall victory.
